Integrating inspection into school practice

Former Deputy Head at Warwick School and now Senior Leadership Teams advisor, Dr Simon Chapman, outlines some advice and thoughts on what schools should consider whether they are preparing for an inspection under the new framework or have already been inspected.

As we approach the second year of the ISI Framework 23, it is a good time to reflect on not only expectations of the Framework but also those aspects that should becoming integral to the workings of the Leadership Team and schools as whole. Drawing upon work undertaken with schools and their experiences of being inspected the following aspects should now be central to all those with leadership responsibility.

Log-Analyse-Act
Documentation has always been a part of inspection, but the new framework places particular emphasis on the following:

  • Anti-Bullying Log and Sanctions
  • Incidents of Sexual Harassment
  • Complaints
  • Attendance
  • Single Central Register (SCR)

With the exception of the SCR, schools are now expected to demonstrate that they keep a log of incidents, concerns, complaints and attendance. This includes the requirement to catgorise entries (for example academic, pastoral, health and safety for complaints or by bullying type for an antibullying log).
